Kilims are said to have been around since prehistoric times, as a replacement for animal skins as rugs and floor coverings. Kilims are set apart from pile rugs in that they have a very simple and unique flat weave developed thousands of years ago. Over time, Kilims have become more colorful, intricate, and decorative while remaining simple and light to carry. Kilims are often simple in color and pattern, but they also have great motifs and sometimes tell entire stories of history and culture because they have origins from all around the world.
Kilims are made of all types of fabric- wool, cotton, and have been made out of other animal hair throughout the years. They are common rugs in homes all over the world because of their ease of use and care. Sometimes, Kilims are hung on walls like tapestries instead of sprawled on the floor because of their beautiful artistry. If you are looking for a beautiful, simple, woven rug, a Kilim might be right for you.
